SEATTLE -- Wei-Yin Chen threw one of his finest games in the major leagues, allowing just five hits over eight innings in Baltimores 4-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Tim Brown Jersey . What everyone wanted to talk about, however, was his defence. Chen (11-3), who has won his past four starts, set the tone in the first inning when he bounded off the mound, gathered a slow roller and glove-flipped the ball to the plate to prevent a run. "That was a little bit of a momentum change there," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Then he showed how to get people out after that." Delmon Young hit a three-run homer in the Orioles four-run third inning and that was all Chen needed as he scattered five singles, walked one and struck out three, matching his career high for innings pitched. His 11 wins ties him for third-most in American League. On the road, Chen is 6-1 with a 3.94 ERA in nine starts. Darren ODay finished with a routine ninth inning. It was Baltimores eighth shutout. The Mariners have been shut out 12 times, tying Tampa Bay for the most in the American League. Chens only hint of trouble came in the first. James Jones walked and stole second, the rookies 20th of the season. After a groundout, Robinson Cano dribbled a ball in front of the plate. Chen scooped and flipped it with his glove to catcher Caleb Joseph, who tagged Jones as he slid in head first. "They actually practice that play in spring but its one of those things people think youre killing time with pitchers," Showalter said. "But it came into play today." Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon protested the call but it was crew chief Fieldin Culbreth who initiated a TV replay review to determine if Joseph illegally blocked the plate. After a review of 3:45, the original call was confirmed. "I was going on contact and his foot was there in the way," Jones said. "I didnt understand the rules, if I could run through him or I didnt know what to do but he was definitely in front of that plate." Joseph said hes "pretty clear on the rules." "You try catch it and make the tag," he said. "The last thing in my mind is where you are position-wise. But thats an important aspect because of the new rules. We got it right tonight. We got it wrong about a month or so ago so it feels good to get it right this time." McClendon still isnt so sure. "I cant go out and argue after the decisions been made," he said. "Im just a little puzzled. He didnt have the ball, his foot was in front of the plate, he caught the ball and he dropped (his knee). To me, thats blocking the plate." Hisashi Iwakuma (8-5), who had won his previous three decisions, lost for the first time since June 25. He went seven innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He struck out five without a walk. Iwakuma, who had just two three-ball counts, has not walked a batter in a club-record five straight starts, a span of 35 2-3 innings. He is second in club history in walk-less innings behind Cliff Lees 38, set in June 2010. Iwakuma has 33 strikeouts against no walks in those five starts. The Orioles began their four-run third with singles by John Flaherty, Joseph and Nick Markakis. Markakis single drove in one run and on the next pitch Young hit his fourth homer. It was the Orioles 123rd of the season, tying Toronto for the most in the majors. Young said he wasnt thinking home run "just something to get us the runner in from third." Dustin Ackley of the Mariners had a single in the second to give him a seven-game hitting streak and push his July average to .373. NOTES: Beyond the Mariners acquisition of DH Kendrys Morales from the Twins before the game, the club also added two players from Triple-A Tacoma to the roster. Jesus Montero was called up for a second stint and started at DH. Chris Taylor started at short in his first major league game and singled in the fifth. When he called his parents in Virginia Beach to tell them the news, Taylor said, "it was tough to hold it together. That moment is something youre never going to forget. Talking to them on the phone, telling them the news, hearing their voices, how excited they were, its just an indescribable feeling." To make room, the club sent RHP Taijuan Walker back to Tacoma and placed INF Willie Bloomquist (right knee contusion) on the 15-day DL. . The Orioles acquired INF Jimmy Paredes from Kansas City for cash considerations. He will report to the minors. Justin Ellis Jersey . -- The Sacramento Kings have signed first-round pick Nik Stauskas to his rookie contract. Khalil Mack Jersey . -- Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson couldnt hear himself amid the roar in Koch Arena, so he kept stomping on the floor in a fruitless attempt to get his teams attention. http://www.theraidersfansclub.com/Black-Cordarrelle-Patterson-Raiders-Jersey.html?cat=952 . Portuguese sides Benfica and Porto also advanced to the last eight while Basel overcame an early red card to win 2-1 at Salzburg and progress from a last-16 second leg that was briefly suspended because of crowd trouble. Lyon, Valencia and AZ Alkmaar will also be in Fridays draw in Nyon, Switzerland, where the team to avoid will be Juventus -- even though the Italian champions made heavy work of their all-Italian last-16 match against Fiorentina. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Bulls guard Jimmy Butler believes hes getting his rhythm back after missing 12 games this season with injuries. Butler scored 14 of his season-high 26 points in the third quarter and Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 10 rebounds to help Chicago defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 95-91 on Monday night. Butler, who missed 11 games earlier this season with a right toe injury and sat out one game on Dec. 21 with a right ankle problem, shot 6 for 10 overall and 2 of 3 on 3-pointers. He also was 12 of 14 at the foul line in a team-high 41 minutes. "Im getting real comfortable," Butler said. "I sat down with a few of the vets, and they just talked to me and told me to play my game and have fun. When you have fun, everything else takes care of itself." D.J. Augustin had 10 points off the bench for the Bulls, including eight in the fourth period as Memphis tried to make a late run. "We played poorly," Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said. "We played poor in the first half and worse in the third quarter." Mike Conley finished with 26 points, nine assists, six rebounds and six steals to lead the Grizzlies, who had won three of four. James Johnson scored 13 points, all in the second half, and grabbed 10 rebounds before fouling out with 4:10 left. Tony Allen also had 13 points but Memphis committed a season-high 21 turnovers. "It was awful," Joerger said. "We threw the ball all over the place. We lacked focus. We lacked screening and cutting. We were loose with the ball." The Bulls also had 21 turnovers but they won despite playing again without leading scorer Luol Deng, who missed his fifth straight game with a sore left Achilles. Chicagos defence began causing real problems for the Grizzlies in the third as the Bulls opened the second half with a 20-4 run, fueled by a handful of Memphis turnoverrs and the Grizzlies missing 11 of their first 13 shots. DeAndre Washington Jersey. That contributed to the Bulls extending the lead to 18 and eventually carrying a 71-64 advantage into the fourth quarter. Memphis, led by Conley, chipped away at Chicagos 18-point advantage -- its largest of the night. The Grizzlies pulled to 72-71 in the fourth and 78-76 later, both after scores by Johnson. Augustin nailed a long 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with about 6 minutes left to answer Johnsons second score. "It was a tough shot at a tough moment," Augustin said. "Whenever somebody does that to a team, it takes away their momentum. They had it going at the time." Augustins basket started a 10-2 run, capped by Kirk Hinrichs 3-pointer with 3:33 left, that pushed the Bulls lead back to 10. That was enough for Chicago to earn its fourth victory in the last 12 games. "Its very tough against them," Conley said. "You cant give them a 15-point lead and expect to not be worn out by the time you get the ball back and youre down two. Theyre a fantastic defensive team. They work hard. They have a bunch of guys that love to play D. It was tough." NOTES: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau missed the morning shootaround to attend his fathers funeral in Connecticut. The elder Thibodeau died on Christmas Day, according to published reports. "Our family, once I saw they were good, I felt good about (coaching)," Thibodeau said before the game. ... Bulls G Derrick Rose, who played one season at the University of Memphis, missed the game with his right knee injury. Rose has returned only twice to Memphis to play against the Grizzlies in his NBA career. ... Conleys 26 points were the most he has had since scoring 28 against Minnesota on Dec. 15 -- the last game before he missed two straight with a left thigh bruise. ... Chicago was 6 for 15 from 3-point range.
